Careers In Education Project: Lesson Planning
Personal Narrative
Throughout my life I have been through many events. The most significant event that impacted my life the most was my family and I moving churches. We went from a small Lahu community church to a big diverse church. At first I was really nervous and upset with my parents because I had to leave my friends and make new ones. It nerve wrecking but it helped me step outside of my comfort zone and make new friends outside my ethnicity.
I moved churches in 2007 when I was about 8 years old. First I was going to a small church in Tulare California but my parents found another church they were interested in at Visalia California. When my parents first told me that we were moving churches I was so upset about it. It was like moving schools, and I knew that I would have to make new friends. I was the kind of person that didn’t like making new friends because I wasn’t an outgoing person so it was hard to make new friends. The first church we were at was a small church and the new one was 10x bigger, and that scared me. Even though I didn’t want to move I had no choice.
I remember the first sunday like if it was yesterday. I got put into a new sunday school with strangers. I was so shy that I didn’t speak to the other kids unless they spoke to me first, and if they spoke to me I would short answer them because I didn’t want to be there. Not long after I made a group of friends. They were super nice and friendly, and they invited me to sleepovers. I was so surprised that I made friends within like 3 weeks. I even got involved with church and started to actually like the new church. When I made friends and got comfortable in the church I was actually happy that I moved because there was more activities than my old church.
Thinking back I am glad that I moved churches. It has changed my life in so many ways. I learned that in life you need to take risks because you don’t know how that can change your life if you don’t try it. I made new friends that lasts a lifetime. I am still friends with the group of girls that I meant in 3rd grade. We are the best of friends. Those group of friends changed my life because they held me accountable and helped me be the best I can be. They motivate me to reach my goals and help me along the way as well. They are always there for me and love all of them dearly.
After all, moving churches wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. I am really happy that I moved churches because now I have a group of friends that I can count on for life. Throughout my life I have been through alot, but moving churches has had the biggest impact on my life. I thank my parents for finding the church. Before I moved churches I was a really shy kid and now I am kind of outgoing and talkative. I am really happy that I got connected to this church because my life wouldn’t be the same without it.

Personal Statements
Q.#1) What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?
I believe that everyone has their own talent/skill. I think mine is being able to reach out to others and making friends. I say that because i’ve moved schools and churches before and I had to go out of my comfort zone and make new friends. In 2003 my family and I moved churches. I was in 3rd grade and I was really shy so it took a while for me to make new friends. When I was in 6th grade we had to get into groups and work on something. I had to ask this girl named Caroline if I can join her group and from then on we became good friends still to this day. Then about a year ago I saw this new girl walk into my youth group at church and I walked up to her and introduced myself and invited her into my grow group and we became good friends still to this day.
Q.#2) Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
There are many challenges that I have faced in my life. The most significant is me being the first one to attend college in my family. I say this because being the first one makes the whole process very difficult and stressful. My parents do not have degrees and can not provide the help I need sometimes. To overcome this challenge I had to get more connected to my counselors and teachers that can help me apply to colleges and other paperwork. My parents not having degrees was also challenging because I couldn’t get help from them and I had to learn a lot on my own and that has caused me to limit my education because I am not as smart as I want to be. I’m not blaming my parents but it’ll be nice to have parents that can help on school work. It has limited my education which caused me to limit my choices of college. It is really hard to get in colleges without good guidence so I am applying to COS and then transferring to Fresno State which is not bad at all but I would have liked to move out of lindsay and attend a UC or CSU.
Q.#3) Describe your favorite academic subject and explain how it has influenced you.
My favorite subject is Careers in Education. I love that class because we learn a lot about early child development and how to become a teacher. I want to become a teacher and Careers in Ed. has helped a lot. Later in the school year my teacher told me that we will be going to elementary schools and work with kids and i’m so excited about that. We will also have a chance to know what it feels like to have a baby. We will have the opportunity to take care of a baby for a week and the baby will act like a real baby and it will cry and want milk and need its diaper changed. That will be an experience that I will never forget. We also learn about how kids develop and a lot of people's theories about child development.
Q.#4) Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.
I have experienced being a leader because my parents do not speak english so I have been there to help them with a lot of things. I go with them to doctor appointments and paying bills. I have to go and lead them because they don’t speak english and I translate for them. Being able to go with them everywhere to translate has let me experience what the real world will be like. For example when my parents go to the insurance and I translate for them. That experience can benefit me because when i’m older I will need an insurance company and I will know some things because of my parents. Another opportunity I had to show my leadership skills is in ASB. ASB is Associated Student Body. I have been able to be involved at school more by planning school activities and rallies. In ASB we plan everything. I had the chance to go out on school campus and show cardinal pride and lead the students.
